I’ve been spending a lot of time researching video. A 5D Mark II will do that to you. It’s far more difficult to create something compelling than I had imagined. So far I’ve only performed some basic camera testing and attended a few seminars. Oh, and I re-learned that the cinematographer is not the camera operator. That may be basic information to you but it’s so radically different from the still world (unless your Gregory Crewdson) that it’s easy to forget.

I am drawn to the idea of the moving painting. Take a look at the work of Richard Mosse.

Shot in Saddam Hussein’s hilltop palace in the mountains overlooking the River Tigris, Theatre of War is a slow, virtually static video piece redolent of classical history painting. Audio was recorded at the official US military hand-over ceremony at the nearby city of Saniya. A mullah’s prayer for unity among Arabs is spoken, after which the pan-Arab national anthem, Mawtini (My Homeland) is played, emphasizing Arab national solidarity and a pan-Arab territory. Made in Iraq in March 2009.

I had always imagined photographing this old store from the front but made some other exposures while I was there – just in case. It turned out to be a good idea. The exposure of the building side is much stronger and more iconic than that of the front. Maybe it’s best to let go of your preconceived notions of what the photograph should be. Good photographers probably know that. Other photographers, like myself, have to force themselves to shoot more than they think they should. The view that best describes a place might just be a surprise and you may not see it until the opportunity to photograph it is gone. Lesson learned.

You’ll have to watch the talk for his answer. Mine is a bit different and comes in the form of a question. How can I illustrate the simple beauty of the landscape without making calendar photos and all the while maintain an audience? Or maybe how to create accessible beauty and not make kitsch? That’s the question for me. The answer is slow coming.
